internetI feel obligated to write something about eXeem. eXeem 0.20 was released recently. This is a significant program because it decentralizes BitTorrent. About one third of all Internet traffic are BitTorrent files. BitTorrent is an excellent way to transfer large files. This worries the MPAA because now movies are easier to download than ever, and newer technology will probably make it even easier.
Not too long ago, the MPAA followed in the path of the RIAA and threatened legal action. They went after the operators of BitTorrent "tracker" sites, which are like hubs of file sharing information. This was an easy victory over the targeted sites. A harder target would be the distributed nature of p2p.
eXeem comes into the picture because it turns every client into a tracker. Now there are not a few obvious targets for lawsuits, but thousands, or even millions, of people.
On Wednesday, SBC Communications announced a deal on their SBC Yahoo! Express DSL package. New customers who also buy SBC local phone service can get DSL service for only $14.95. This puts DSL in the same price range as the cheaper dial up options, such as NetZero, Netscape, and PeoplePC. This is a great deal considering that this DSL package is roughly 25 times faster than dial up.
If you are using AOL right now, you should ask yourself why you are paying so much for such a slow connection. Is it really worth waiting 10-20 seconds or more just for a page to load? Don't be fooled by AOL Top Speed or NetZero Hi Speed. These gimmicks do nothing to speed up images, videos, music, or other downloads.
I just read my monthly DreamHost newsletter, and I was suprised to see that all accounts would be given 4 times the disk space and 8 times the bandwidth, no additional cost. They also increased the weekly disk space and bandwidth quotas accordingly.
I have the basic level plan, which is as low as 7.95 per month. I now have about 21GB disk space and over 1TB of bandwidth to play with. Every week my disk space grows by 160MB and my bandwidth grows by 8GB.
If you operate one or more websites, I strongly recommend switching to DreamHost, they are phenomenal value.
http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?sproutworksI have been evaluating Zend Studio 5 beta 2 for my many PHP related projects. It contains the things I like about the older versions, and also some of the things that I dislike. I like the features it contains. The auto suggest feature is nice, but sometimes it delays my typing as it is loading. Zend Studio, written in Java, can be quite a memory hog. Sometimes it causes the Java process to consume almost 200M RAM. I think that's a bit much for an IDE. Then oddly, it can drop down to only a few megabytes. Also, the file open dialog box is annoying. It keeps putting me in the My Documents directory, which is not where my web projects are located. Despite it's performance shortcomings, I will continue to use Zend Studio, while keeping an eye out for their new Eclipse based IDE.
